Cloth Diapers And The Environment
People probably just assume that cloth diapers are good for the environment, right?  Maybe they are and maybe they aren't.  There has been a general assumption that if we aren't throwing disposable diapers in a landfill, then it must be better for the environment.
However, some "experts" have conducted studies on the difference between the number of diapers in a landfill and the effect it has on the environment versus the amount of water and energy we use in washing cloth diapers.  The experts determined, on a "Green Myths" episode of one of the satellite channels, that there was really no difference between the two.  That the two different process had about the same effect.
Not so fast!  Some of the things that can't be taken into account are, what are our landfills going to look and react like in fifty to one hundred years from now?  Noone knows because we aren't there yet!  Anything they have to offer on that is simply speculative.  And what about the real cost of producing the paper disposable products?  The researches said they took that into account, but...did they?  What, exactly, did they take into account.  Did they consider how many trees it takes to make a paper diaper?  How much energy will be expended replacing the trees?  How much energy is used up pulverising the pulp to make the disposable diapers?  How many chemicals are pumped into the environment and what will it take to clean up those damaging elements?  How about the energy used to run the plant that makes the disposable diapers.  Here's another one!  How much energy is used up in packing and transporting the disposable diapers?  How about all the disposable diaper disposers that individually wrap the diapers in plastic for another 100 years of added non-degradability!?
So, did the REALLY take all those factors into consideration?  We believe that they didn't and that if you really considered the entire environmental impact of disposable diapers versus cloth diapers, you would find that cloth diapers are much better for everyone!  What do you think?
